Wat jy moet weet
Landowners can apply to undertake controlled burns on their properties. But it’s vital to adhere to a number of important guidelines and rules before lighting the match.
- According to Overberg Fire & Rescue’s bylaws, it’s compulsory to obtain a burn permit BEFORE starting a controlled burn. The application form is available on the goFPA website.
- In order to receive a burn permit, landowners must provide information, such as where they intend to burn (including an accurate map) and what resources are available to control and extinguish the fire.
- Neighbours must also be informed of the controlled burn AT LEAST 2 weeks prior to the burn.
The fire department considers each application carefully, and, based on the merits of the application, provides the landowner with a burn permit.
There are two types of applications:
1. An application for stubble burning, light fuel burning on stubble lands and rubbish dump burns.

Grondeienaars kan aansoek doen vir beheerde brande op hul eiendomme. Maar dis noodsaaklik om aan ’n paar belangrike riglyne en reëls te voldoen voor jy die vuur aansteek.
- Volgens Overberg Brandweerdienste se verordeninge is dit verpligtend om ’n brandpermit te kry voor jy ’n beheerde brand aansteek. Die aansoekvorm is beskikbaar op die goFPA-webtuiste.
- Om ’n brandpermit te ontvang moet die grondeienaar inligting verskaf, soos waar die brand sal plaasvind (insluitend ’n akkurate kaart) en watter hulpbronne beskikbaar is om die brand te beheer en te blus.
- Bure moet MINSTENS twee weke voor die beplande brand ingelig word.
Die Brandweerdienste oorweeg elke aansoek noukeurig en verskaf ’n brandpermit gebaseer op die meriete van die aansoek.
Daar is twee tipes aansoeke:
1. ’n Aansoek vir die brand van stoppellande, brandbare materiaal op stoppellande en vullisgate.

HERE’S WHAT TO THINK ABOUT WHEN PLANNING YOUR CONTROLLED BURN:
- The weather – and most importantly, the wind.
- The vegetation you intend to burn.
- Whether firebreaks are in place.
- Whether neighbours are informed.
- An action plan should things go wrong.

Other important regulations that you should consider:
- You’re not permitted to burn on an Orange or Red Fire Danger Index day.
- Friday and weekend burns aren’t permitted – unless special permission is awarded by the fire department.
- You must contact the control centre before the burn starts.
- And all fires must be extinguished by 4.30pm.
- As the landowner, you are ultimately responsible for the fire and its consequences.
A quick note: The difference between the different kinds of burns:
Prescribed burns include ecological, agricultural and controlled burns, meaning when the prescribed conditions are in place, you can burn.
A controlled burn is a fire started intentionally to reduce fire risks, by for example burning fuel loads.
An ecological burn is a fire started intentionally with the aim of restoring or supporting the health of the biodiversity. Some controlled burns are NOT ecological burns, should they, for example, be started at the wrong time of year or in a landscape that does not require wildfire.
Agricultural burns: This is a fire that is started intentionally under the correct conditions to clear land of combustible material for planting of crops.

- Jy mag nie op oranje of rooi brandgevaarindeks- (FDI-) dae brand nie.
- Brande op Vrydae en naweke word nie toegelaat nie, tensy die Brandweerdienste spesiale toestemming verleen.
- Jy moet die beheersentrum kontak voor jy die vuur aansteek.
- Alle brande moet teen 16:30 geblus wees.
- As die grondeienaar is jy ten volle vir die brand en die gevolge daarvan verantwoordelik.
’n Kort nota oor die verskillende soorte brande
Voorgeskrewe brande sluit ekologiese, landbou- en beheerde brande in, wat beteken dat die brand kan plaasvind indien die voorgeskrewe bepalings in plek is.
’n Beheerde brand is ’n vuur wat aangesteek word met die doel om die risiko van wegholbrande te verminder, byvoorbeeld deur brandbare materiaal te verbrand.
’n Ekologiese brand is ’n vuur wat aangesteek word met die doel om die welstand van die biodiverse omgewing te herstel of te ondersteun. Sommige beheerde brande is nie ekologiese brande nie indien die vuur byvoorbeeld op die verkeerde tyd van die jaar of in ’n landskap wat nie ’n veldbrand benodig nie aangesteek word.
’n Landboubrand is ’n vuur wat aangesteek word met die doel om in die gepaste toestande landbougrond van brandbare materiaal skoon te maak in die voorbereiding vir saai.
A final tip:
It’s vital to use common sense before lighting the match. Be flexible based on the day (weather etc.) and be prepared to change should the circumstances not support a controlled burn. It’s safer to err on the side of caution.

Dis noodsaaklik om jou gesonde verstand te gebruik voor jy die vuur aansteek. Wees aanpasbaar op die dag (met die weer inaggenome, ens.) en wees daarop voorbereid om van plan te verander indien die toestande nie vir ’n beheerde brand reg is nie. Dis veiliger om oorversigtig te wees.
